V.I.Pace Runners Bulletin: # 11-11-06 Top V.I. Cross-Country Runners Rise to the Occasion… 11-11-06--St.Croix, Virgin Islands--Juan Robles, St. Croix Central High School (CHS); Ninfa Barnard, St. Croix Educational Complex High School (ECHS); Tabari Davis, Charlette Amalie High School (CAHS); Allison Peter, ECHS; Jason Leatham, Joseph Gomez Elementary School (GES) and Corrina Richards of Calvary Christian School (CCS) finished in first place in their respective categories on Saturday in the Veterans Day 5K/4H Cross-Country Series Championships and are the scholastic champions in V.I. Cross-Country for 2006. In the open Veterans Day 5K, Ruth Ann David, a member of the 2004 V.I. National Cross-Country Team at the World Cross-Country Championships in Brussels, Belgium was the top female finisher in the race with a time of 19 minutes 54 seconds and the fastest female time in the Virgin Islands for 2006. Jared Knoy was the first place open male finisher in 21:33. Robles wasted no time as he went to the lead early and was there as he passed the cheering crowd near the 400m point and was clocked 5:08 for the first mile. He would build his lead on each lap of the three-lap race, to set a personal record for the University of the Virgin Islands St. Croix Campus course with a time of 16:39. As predicted the race for second place was close as Clint Smith of ECHS prevailed with a time of 19:27 over Ian Cuffy of ECHS for third place in 19:50; Kyron Correa of CAHS was fourth in 20:27 and Shalen George of CAHS was fifth in 20:41. Ninfa Barnard trimmed a huge 2 minutes off her time for the 3.1 mile distance for a personal record to take first place for the Varsity Girls with a time 20:45 with Mac Kiesh Taylor a distant second in 25:31; Creolar Jn-Baptiste of CAHS made a race for second with a third place time of 25:58; Darlene De Castro of ECHS was fourth in 27:59 and Casandra Harris of CAHS was fifth in 28:40. Less than a minute separated the Junior Varsity girls in the two mile race as Allison Peter ECHS ran a personal course record and trimming over a minutes off her previous time, won it in 14:17; Amadie Cooper of CAHS was second in 15:17; Tinequa Lee of Eudora Kean High School (KHS) was third in 15:39; Kali Bunn of Antilles School was fourth in 16:29 and Jessica James of ECHS was fifth in 17:03. Tabari Davis CAHS was slightly off the pace and in third place at the end of the first lap of the race as he moved up to take the win in a very close finish in 12:31; Justin Hitesman of ECHS was second in 12:49; Julian Stuart of JGS was third in 13:05; Roland Morrell of Bertha C. Boshulte School (BCBS) was fourth in 13:17 and Will Peil of Country Day School (CDS) was fifth in 13:21. The elementary school boys and girls races over the one mile distance were perhaps the most exciting as less than a minute separated the top three finishers in the girls race and less than a minute separated the top five boys in their race. Jason Leatham of (GES) set a course record to take first place with a time of 6:08; a mere eight seconds behind him and second was Malique Todman of Cancyrn School (CS) in 6:18; third was Malique Smith of Sunny Isle Baptist Christian School (SIBC) 6:21; Ezekiel Peterson of Abraham Elementary School (AES) was fourth in 6:36 and Mychal Evans of Calvary Christian School (CCS) was fifth in 7:00. Carina Richards of CCS was the first place fisher for the elementary girls in 6:53; Kayla Kellog of AS was second in 7:08; Jazmine Willock of Church of God Holiness Academy (CGA) was third in 7:23; Karen Dascent of Ricardo Richards Elementary School (RRS) was fourth in 7:25 and Shanice James of GES was fifth in 7:58. The Veterans Day 5K//4H-Cross-Country Series/Virgin Islands Cross-Country Championships were hosted by the University of the Virgin Islands-Cooperative Extension Services/4-H Program; organized by the Virgin Islands Pace Runners and the St. Croix Track Club; Sanctioned by the Virgin Islands Track and Field Federation and supported by the St. Croix Interscholastic Association and the St. Thomas/St. John Interscholastic Association. Juan Robles of St. Croix Central High (CHC) School took a slightly different tactic yesterday as he ran just off the lead runners for the first half-mile or so, but as they approached the only hill on this 3.1 mile course that has been used for cross-country for nearly thirty years, he pulled away and cut his time down to 17 minutes and 52 seconds for first place overall. Seymour Walters of St. Croix Educational Complex High School (ECHS) had a breakthrough performance to take second place with a time of 19:58 followed by Clint Smith of ECHS and second last week took third in 20:13. Ninfa Barnard ECHS was also a repeat winner for the Varsity Girls as she trimmed 24 seconds off her time with a 22:06.
