National Library Week—Run To Your Library in St.Croix… 

4-19-08 St.Croix, Virgin Islands--Much to do at the public library in the Virgin Islands as National Library Week is celebrated throughout the U.S.A.  with the theme “Join the Circle of Knowledge”.  The group of runners at The 26th National Library Week—Run To Your Library joined as they ran the 5K road race on the loop course in historic Christiansted. 

Billy Bohlke in his final tune-up for the Lincoln Marathon, led the way with the first place finish overall with a time of 16 minutes and 28 seconds.  Chris Cockrell a visiting student from Arkansas studying at the University of the Virgin Islands was second in 19:13; and 15 year-old Will Piel of St.Croix Country Day School was third in 19:31.   

Mireille Smith, former top middle distance runner at Eastern Michigan University and the Surinam National Team, was the first female finisher with a time 21:45; Dulcie Crowther in her favorite race was second in 21:58 and Sara Gambee in almost a photo finish was third in 23:46 and just ahead of Amanda Wareheim in 23:52.

Results 24th National Library Week Run To Your Library… 

4-7-06 St.Croix--The annual celebration of National Library Week signaled the 24th running of the NLW Run To Your Library in downtown Christiansted on Saturday morning nearing the end of a weeklong list of activities at the Florence Williams Public Library.  Juan Robles took first place overall in the 3.1 mile road race on the streets of historic Christiansted with a time of 17 minutes and 10 seconds (a 46 second improvement on his winning time of last year).  Patrick Joy ran the most strategic race of the day as he trailed Charles Hamel and Collin Daugherty for three of the four lap race and pulled ahead going up Company St. and finished second in 19:43; Hamel was third in  20:10, Daugherty fourth in 20:40; Mark Kennedy was fifth in 21:53 (1 minute and 30 seconds faster than last year); Errol Chichester was sixth in 22:38; Kiril Logvinoff was seventh in 23:27; Tapia Ceasar was eighth in 23:40; Scott Fricks was ninth in 23:44; John Mahony was tenth in 23:50; Jose Ramirez was eleventh in 30:30. 

Tish Dusich continued her winning ways as she was the first female finisher in 21:06; Erica Sweitzer, a teacher at the Ricardo Richards Elementary School, was second in 21:46; Arlene Watson was third in 23:42; Dulcie Crowther was fourth in 24:10 (2 minutes and 48 seconds faster than last year); Theresa Harper, in the final days of training for the Boston Marathon, was fifth in 24:18; Sarah Bostwick was sixth in 27:13.

Robles and Distad Are the Top Finishers...  

April 16, 2005, St. Croix, V.I.--One of the highlights of the celebration of National Library Week was the running of the 23rd National Library Week Run To Your Library on Saturday morning in downtown Christiansted.  The 3.1 mile race was won this year by Juan Robles with a time of 17 minutes and 56 seconds; Tesha Distad won the women’s category with a time of 22:36.  Robles, a bronze medal winner in the 2004 CARIFTA Championships 3000 meters and currently the top high school distance runner in the Virgin Islands, had no challenge as he held a brisk pace down King St., up Company St. and through the newly renovated, Sunday Market Square.  Mike Klein, in the final stages of training for the upcoming triathlon, was second in 18:59 to make his goal of sub 19 minutes; Richard Jean-Pierre, was third in 20:05. 

Tesha Distad, also training for the triathlon, was the first female to finish the race, her time was 22:26, just barely ahead of Earthla Augustin who was second in 22:54; Louise Stapleton was third in 24:57.

The first place finishers won medals, a subscription to Running Times Magazine, certificates signed by the Governor of the Virgin Islands, special library bookmarks and free library cards.  

National Library Week is celebrated annually throughout the U.S. in April.  The race was sponsored by the FRIENDS of the Florence Williams Public Library and organized by the Virgin Islands Pace Runners. 

The next event on the V.I.Pace Calendar is the 17th Paradise 5K on Thursday April 28 at 6pm at the Buccaneer Hotel followed by The Children Run Christiansted on Friday April 29 6pm at the Sunday Market Square in Christiandsted (this race is 630meters and for children 13 and under).

4/24/04, St. Croix, Virgin Islands---On a busy sports weekend the 22nd Virgin Islands Pace Runners National Library Week Run To Your Library 5K drew a small field of runners at the 6am start in historic downtown Christiansted.  Billy Bohlke, the top male distance runner in the Virgin Islands, took the lead from the start on a four-loop course and set a new record for the race with a time of 15 minutes and 34 seconds, the previous record was 15:54 set by George Jules in 1997.  Kent Bradbury, a top runner in the V.I. for years, made the race his last as he is moving to New Mexico, his time was 19:19; Kamal Russell was third with a time of 23:25; Errol Chichester was fourth in 23:01; Alan Bronstein, a founding member of the FRIENDS of the Florence Williams Public Library, was fifth in 33:59.  

Letitia  Dusich, the second place finisher overall and first place female also set a race record for women with a time of 19:19; Theresa Harper, just five days after completing the Boston Marathon, finished second in 20:43; Terry Chretien was third in 28:19; Angela Bradbury was fourth in 30:07; Nellie O’Reilly was fifth in 33:16.

Note:  The race route through the Sunday Market (aka Times Square) was altered and ran over newly exposed cobble stones, likely making it the first and last time a road race was and will ever be run on them as they will be covered over with another surface at the completion of the restoration project for the Sunday Market.


Adams, Harper Win National Library Week—"Run To Your Library 5K"

April 12, 2003, St. Croix, Virgin Islands---People who run races of distances of a mile to the marathon are dedicated and focused.  That’s the least that can be said of Theresa Harper who won her last race in St. Croix before running the Boston Marathon a week from Monday.  Alex Adams show continued progress as he won his first road race with a time of 20 minutes and 10seconds.  Harper was unchallenged in the women’s field and shared the lead in the race with Adams until he pulled away on lap three of the four lap 3.1 mile course down King St. and up Company St.  She did narrow the gap as the two raced down King St. To the Florence Williams Public Library finish one second behind in 20:11.  Michael Hurst took second for the men in 21:40; Earthla Arthur took second for female 22:37; Mc Donald Taylor was the third male in 25:17; Jo Shim was the third female in 24:16 was 12 year-old Mc Kiesh Taylor was fourth in 25:17 and Jack Branch was fourth in 27:17.  

The race was the culminating event of the celebration of National Library Week at the Florence Williams Public Library.  The race was sponsored by the FRIENDS of the Florence Williams Public Library which provided medals and certificates to the winners/participants and a one year subscription to Running Times Magazine to the first place male and female finishers.


Jules and Arthur Win "Run To Your Library"...

April 20, 2002, St.Croix, Virgin Islands--George Jules and Earthla Arthur, both from St. Lucia, won the annual National Library Week "Run To Your Library" 5K Road Race on Saturday to kick-off the final day of the annual celebration of National Library Week at the Florence Williams Public Library.  Jules, running his first race in a while, toured the first of four laps in Christiansted, with Arthur, enabling her to an improved performance.  In taking first place overall, Jules ran the 3.1 miles in 18 minutes and 14 seconds.  Arthur, training for next week's Carnival Mile in St.Thomas, took second overall and first for females in 21:47.  Teddy Seymour, will also run the mile in St.Thomas where he is the defending age-group champion for runners over 50, his time Saturday was 2nd in 22:21; 3rd place went to Rey Lutz in 24:47; 4th Scott Fricks 24:55; 5th John Durity 27:36; 6th Stewart Ketchum 27:44.

Theresa Harper competed successfully  in her first Boston Marathon, used the race to loosen tight muscles, was second Saturday in 24:27; Dulcie Crowther (while pushing her son in a trainer) was third in 26:49; 4th Patie Hensley 27:57; 5th Judie Fricks 28:22; 6th Debbie Aronstein 29:24.
