Olympic Scholarships for Athletes “Athens” 2004
Financial Assistance Available to Top Athletes
 

The Federation has just been informed that in addition to the grants made available by the Virgin Islands Olympic Committee to senior athletes who commit to represent the V.I. in top competition including: the CAC Championships, CAC Track and Field Championships, the Pan American Games, World Championships and the Olympic Games, additional funds to support individual athletes are being made possible through Olympic Solidarity. 

The Program of Olympic scholarships for athletes “Athens 2004” has been developed by Olympic Solidarity with the principle objective of assisting athletes nominated by their respective National Olympic Committee (NOCs) in the preparation and qualification for the Games of the XXVIII Olympiad, Athens. The funds are provided for the period leading up to the Olympics in Athens. 

Should an athlete be awarded an Olympic scholarship, Olympic scholarship, Olympic Solidarity and the NOC will ensure that he/she will be provided with the following”: 

  • Access to appropriate training facilities

  • A coach specialized in the relevant sporting discipline

  • Regular medical and scientific assistance and control

  • Accident and illness insurance

  • Board and lodging costs

  • Adequate pocket money 

The following items are not covered by an Olympic scholarship” 

  • Academic studies

  • Personal clothing and equipment

  • Medical interventions not covered by the insurance policy 

Termination of a Scholarship 

Following consultation with the NOC, Olympic Solidarity reserves the right to terminate any Olympic scholarship at any time in cases where there is: 

  • Non-qualification for the Athens Olympic Games

  • Decline of technical level

  • Medical reason, including injury

  • A conflict of sporting ethics (discipline, doping, etc.)

  • Other reasons in mutual agreement with the NOC 

Athletes interested in applying for the scholarship must do the following immediately: 

Provide a current photograph, copy of passport, valid health certification, a detailed letter explaining why and to what degree he/she is willing to compete for the Virgin Islands in the Olympics.

This information must be submitted to the Virgin Islands Track and Field Federation not later than June 1, 2002.
