UVI Alums Take Top Honors in Queen Mary 5K Run/Walk
Alphonso Andrews and Earthla Arthur, Graduates of The University of the Virgin Islands
were first place finishers in Road Race
March 17, St. Croix, Virgin Islands--It was fitting that the top male and the
top female finishers in the Queen Mary Highway 5K Run/Walk, an event held
to celebrate the 40th Anniversary of the University of the Virgin Islands, were
both graduates of the university. Alphonso Andrews a 1979 graduate and
Earthla Arthura1998 graduate, led the race to the end of mile two when
Andrews gradually put distance between the two. Andrews, a martial arts
specialist and volleyball player, received a BA Degree in Business Administration
and later became the youngest Judge appointed to Territorial Court of the
Virgin Islands. His last road race was back in the 80’s when he ran in the
annual Three Kings Mile. His time was 21 minutes and 17 seconds; Cameron Butler
finished second for the men in 22:11; Richard Gibbs was third in 22:22;
Hugh Forte fourth in 23:18 and Rey Lutz was fifth in 24:16. Thirty men
took part in the event.
Earthla Arthur is now a French Teacher at the St.Croix Educational Complex.
She was the top distance runner on the UVI Cross-Country Team a few years back
when the school competed against colleges in Puerto Rico. She was the
first female finisher and second overall in 22:09; Jo Shim was second in
23:19; Katherine Garland and Gene Mitchell tied for third in 28:23 and
Marie Witmer finished fifth in 30:34. Forty-two women participated in the
event.
