Virgin Islands Pace Runners Bulletin:

Results: The 24th Olympic Day Run…

7/11/2010, Carambola Golf Course, St. Croix, Virgin Islands--In the 30 year history of the Virgin Islands Pace Runners, there have been only four running events held at the Carambola Golf Course they include: The Virgin Islands Cross-Country Championships in 1983 held as a prelude to the hosting the CAC Cross-Country Championships (shifted to Puerto Rico) and a few years later yet another V.I. Cross-Country Championships and a 24 hour relay fundraiser for The Red Cross years later and today’s 27th running of the Olympic Day Run.

The Olympic Day Run 2010 was rescheduled from June 20 due to weather.  Member sports Federations of the Virgin Islands Olympic Committee participated in the events including the car raffle held two weeks ago and the golf tournament which followed the run on Sunday.

Several athletes who will represent the V.I. in the CAC Games and the first Youth Olympic Games were introduced by the President of the Virgin Islands Olympic Committee, Hans Lawaetz and other VIOC and Federation officials were on hand to run the scenic but hilly cross-country course which measured a bit longer than the advertised 2 mile and 1 mile loop.

Billy Bohlke representing the V.I. Track and Field Federation, who will run the marathon in Mayaguez had no problem with the two loops as he won in 15:31 a 5 minute and 41 second per mile pace of the 2.7 distance.  Ninfa Barnard a multiple finalist at CARIFTA representing V.I. Track and Field Federation was the female winner in 19:23.  Seymour Walter, selected with Ninfa to compete on the V.I. NACAC Under-23 national team was second overall in 16:27 and Ian Cuffy of UVI was third in 17:27.  Mirielle Smith also representing the V.I. Track and Field Federation was the second female finisher in 22:38, she was followed by Pattie Hasse representing the V.I. Triathlon Federation was third in 22:56.

V.I. Track and Field Federation representatives also dominated the 1.3 mile run as well (first three males and first three females), Twelve year old Malique Smith finished in 9:27; Rodney Griffin was second in 10:31 and Valence Modeste was third in 11:31.  Nine year old Mikaela Smith was the first female finisher in 10:46; Stephanie Rohden was second in 12:21 and Anika Benders was third in 12:29.

Olympic Day Run venue change…Results the same…almost…

June 20, 2009--St.Croix, Virgin Islands--The running of the 26th Annual Olympic Day Run switched venues this year from the University of the Virgin Islands St.Croix Campus to downtown Christiansted in St.Croix.

This year a special invitation from International Olympic Committee and The Virgin Island National Olympic Committee to member federations to support the new Olympic Day event.  Years ago, local runners carried a torch from Mc Donald's in Golden Rock to Mc Donald's in LaReine.  UVI St.Croix has been the venue for a number of years until yesterday.

Peter Holmnberg Olympic Silver Medal winner on the V.I. Olympic Team in 1988 in Seoul, Korea was the guest.  He led the federations and their group of athletes, coaches and officials to positions near the National Park Service bandstand in Christiansted. The federations provided the audience with demonstrations of particular sports.

V.I.track and field runners dominated the event. Billy Bohlke, V.I.Pace Runners, the top long distance runner in the V.I. led the way and finished first in the Olympic Day Run with a time of 10 minutes and 1 second; Seymour Walther of The Junior Barracudas Track Club/St.Croix Educational Complex was second in 10:18; David Walter ECHS/JBTC was third in 11:35; Ian Cuffy of the University of the Virgin Islands/St.Croix Track Club was fourth in 11:41; Michael Msserschmid Uattached 13:10.
