St.Croix, Virgin Islands--12/1/02 Two-time Olympic Marathoner Calvin Dallas won the 28th V.I. Half-Marathon going away Sunday morning in St. Croix. Dallas, one of the top V.I. long distance runners of all time, took the lead from the start at historic Salt River, made the turn-around at Carambola and back along the scenic North Short and finished with a time of 1 hour 20 minutes and 20 seconds. Although the time was off his personal best for the event of 1 hour and 10 minutes run back in the early 90's on a different course, Sunday he ran effortlessly and also was the top master runner in the race at the age of 45. Leopold Fredericks was the second place male with a time of 1:28.35 and the second place master; Steve Burkholder took third in 1:32.33 and was the first place senior; Will Franks was fourth in 1:52.37 and was the second place senior; Ray Ruiz was fifth in 1:54.21 and the third senior; Steve Lammens was sixth in 2:01.47, he was the fourth place senior and Troy Schuster was seventh in 2:16.04
Regina Randazza, ran a strong race to top the women, she ran a time of 1:30.46 to finish third overall in the race. She held second place with Leopold Fredericks for over half way before experiencing stomach pains which forced her to run a slower pace. Rachel Witty was second in1:34.20; Theresa Harper was third in1:41.30; Jo Shim was fourth in 1:48.34 and the first place senior; Kristin Touy was fifth in 1:59.53; Bechy Petri was sixth in 2:08.15.
This year the event was in cooperation with the World Aids Day campaign.
The next event on the V.I. Pace Runners Calendar is The Annual St. Croix Metric Mile on Saturday December 7 at 4:00 p.m. Registration begins at 3:00 pm at Annally Farms. The race starts in Upper Love and finishes at Queen Mary Highway near the intersection of Golden Grove and Dept. of Agriculture.
